Freed Kamlari Distribute Seed Money

May 30, 2014

Sangita Chaudhary (center) is the Kailali district Chairperson for the Freed Kamlari Development Forum (FKDF).  In this photo Sangita is distributing a traditional Tharu dress and 2,000 rupees (approx 21 dollars) to each of the newly rescued Kamlari.  This may not seem like much, but for these girls it's a small fortune – and a head start toward a new and better life.

Sangita, herself a former Kamlari, also trains other FKDF members to provide basic psychological counseling to former slave girls who are having trouble re-entering society or connecting with their families.  In a country where psychological counseling is almost non-existent, providing peer-to-peer counseling is a cost effective and brilliant solution.

Documenting this event are team members Alok Tuladhar and Suneeta Tuladhar of imPACT productions.
